A big, busy neighbor

San Mateo is a city of about a hundred thousand people, and it generates a steady mix of work. East of US-101, Shoreview and the Marina Lagoon neighborhoods have homes from the 1950s and 1960s that are being remodeled. Hayward Park and the Bay Meadows redevelopment have new townhomes and offices. West of El Camino, Baywood and the Highlands have larger lots. Commercial projects line El Camino, Hillsdale Boulevard and the downtown core.

For events, the San Mateo County Event Center hosts trade shows and fairs, Central Park is the downtown green, and Coyote Point on the bay is a county recreation area that groups use.

From Redwood City to San Mateo

San Mateo is two cities north of Redwood City along El Camino, US-101 and the Caltrain line, and the same team serves both. Because San Mateo allows a short Sunday construction window, weekend crews sometimes need a unit when Redwood City sites are quiet. Tell us your crew's working days so service visits are timed around them.

San Mateo work hours and permits

The city's construction hours are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays, and noon to 4 p.m. on Sundays and holidays. Community events on city property need a Special Community Event Permit, filed 90 days ahead for new events and 45 days for returning ones. Picnic reservations are handled separately. When we checked in October 2026, the city's Central Park page listed the playground and picnic areas as closed for construction, so check its status before planning a picnic there.
